I acknowledge receipt of your correspondence of October 18, 2005. Premier Klein has asked me to respond on his behalf.

Please accept my deepest condolences on the passing of your mother. I have reviewed your website and your mother appeared to be a wonderful person with a great devotion for family. I can appreciate that this is a difficult time for you and your family, but please be assured that any death where there are allegations of impropriety is a matter which my government takes very seriously.

I understand from your correspondence that a report has already been filed pursuant to the Protection of Persons in Care Act. Under that legislation upon the receipt of a report of abuse, Seniors and Community Supports is responsible for appointing a person to investigate the complaint. I will copy this correspondence to the Honourable Minister Yvonne Fritz so that she can ensure that the report you refer to has in fact been received by her department.

I am advised by my department staff that Capital Health Region is already conducting an investigation of your Mother’s care and treatment, and understand Capital Health Region will share their findings with you.

Again, please accept my condolences and thank you for taking the time to bring your concerns to my attention.

The Honourable Iris Evans, Minister of Health and Wellness has copied me on a letter to you dated November 22, 2005.

I acknowledge receipt of the report, which Minister Evans refers to in her correspondence. The legislation, which governs the Protection for Persons in Care Act directs that an individual be appointed to investigate a complaint received under the Act.

After the Investigator completes the investigation and submits their report to the appropriate department, a summary of the investigation report will be provided to you. Once you receive the report, you will have an opportunity to comment prior to a final decision on the report. You will receive notification of the final decision.
